Applied Optics and Photonics China, 2017 conference (AOPC 2017) was held in Beijing, China from 4th to 6th of June, 2017. Prof. Min Qiu gave an invited report titled in "Modifying Spatial Mode of Plasmonic Gap Resonances by Strong Light-Matter Interaction".

 
M. A. student Ziyao Chen was awarded “the Best Poster” in AOM 2017

The 6th Conference on Advances in Optoelectronics and Micro/nano-optics (AOM 2017) was took place in Nanjing, China from 23th to 26th of April, 2017. Prof. Min Qiu gave an invited report titled in "Light pushes and pulls by the synergy between optical momentum transfer and photothermal effect". M. A. students Ziyao Chen, Xuelu Pei, and Xiaobin Chen gave poster presentations, respectively. In particularly, Ziyao Chen was awarded the best poster.

 

Research on optical force by J. Lu is published in Physical Review Letters ( Editors’ Suggestion paper and cover paper) and featured in APS Physics

Ph. D. student Jinsheng Lu and other co-authors experimentally realized optical pulling and oscillation of a metallic plate by employing the synergy of optical force and photophoretic force. This result titled "Light-Induced Pulling and Pushing by the Synergic Effect of Optical Force and Photophoretic Force" is published in Physical Review Letters as an Editors’ Suggestion paper as well as Cover Paper. This work is also featured in APS as “Focus Story”.

 
Ph.D. student Kaikai Du was awarded "the Best Poster"
The 8th National Youth Academic Forum of Optics was took place in Hangzhou, China from 7th to 9th of November, 2016. Ph. D. students Wei Wang, Yurui Qu and Kaikai Du gave poster presentations, respectrively. In particular, Kaikai Du was awarded the Best Poster.
 
Prof. Dai-Sik Kim visited Min Qiu Group

Prof. Dao-Sik Kim (Seoul National Unversity, Korea) visited our group on 21st of October, 2016. After giving a speech on “Funneling of terahertz waves through Angstrom-sized double van der Waals gaps”, he discussed with several Ph. D. Students and Prof. Min Qiu for cooperation in relative researches.

 

Prof. Min Qiu attended the 2016 IEEE Photonics Conference

The 29th Annual Conference of the IEEE Photonics Society (The 2016 IEEE Photonics Conference ) was took place in Waikoloa, Hawaii, USA from the 2nd to the 6th of October 2016. The conference is one of the premier international meetings in the field of photonics and is the flagship annual summit of the IEEE Photonics Society. Prof. Min Qiu was one of the featured speakers and gave a tutorial talk titled “Optical nanoantennas and their applications” (90 min).

 
The 15th International Conference on Optical Communications & Networks 
The 15th International Conference on Optical Communications & Networks (ICOCN 2016) was held in Hangzhou on September 25th-27th, 2016. Assoc. Prof. Qiang Li gave an invited talk on “Photothermal switching with light absorbers for silicon-based devices”. Ph. D. students Wei Wang and Hangbo Yang gave poster presentations. In particular, Hangbo Yang’s poster was awarded the Best Poster.

Invited by Prof. Javier García de Abajo, Prof. Min Qiu visited The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Spain on July 29th, and gave a talk titled "Plasmonic Resonances with Film-Coupled Nanoparticles: Strong Coupling and Nonlinear Effects". Later they discussed on the further collabrations in the following time.

Prof. Min Qiu and Dr. Qiang Li attended META 2016, the 7th International Conference on Metamaterials, Photonic Crystals and Plasmonics at Convention & Exhibition Centre, Torremolinos (Malaga), Spain on July 25th - 28th in 2016. Prof. Min Qiu gave a invited talk on "Plasmonic resonances in gold nanorod-film coupled system". Dr. Qiang Li gave a invited talk titled "Plasmonic and Dielectric Nanoantennas for Integrated Photonic Circuitry" and an oral representation on "Optically-controlled local plasmonic nanosoldering of silver nanowires".

 

Prof. Min Qiu in the 2016 List of Elsevier's Most Cited Researchers in the field of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Elsevier is a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services. On June 10th in 2016, Elsevier announced its 2016 list of the most cited researchers which is developed for ShanghaiRanking's global ranking of academic subjects. A total 300 scientists from over 210 universities and academic research institutions worldwide are listed in the field of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Prof. Min Qiu is among the listed 19 Chinese researchers.

Ding Zhao visited the Technical University of Denmark (DTU)

Ph.D. candidate, Ding Zhao visited the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on Apr.4-20, 2016. Guided by Prof. Anpan Han at DTU, he took part in performance testing of a newly-built ice lithography system with William Tiddi. They conducted dose tests of ice films with different thicknesses and tried to reduce vibration caused by external environment. During the visit, he gave a report about research work on nanophotonics and ice lithography instrument in his Ph.D study.

 

Yuanqing Yang visited Australian National University (ANU) for collaborative work

During Feb-March 2016, Yuanqing Yang (Ph.D. candidate) visited the Nonlinear Physics Center in Australian National University as a short-term visiting student. Supervised by Dr. Andrey E. Miroshnichenko and Prof. Yuri Kivshar, Yuanqing conducted the work on dielectric nanoantennas and metasurfaces.

 

Group member visited the University of Sourthern Denmark(SDU)

Invited by Prof. Sergey I. Bozhevolnyi, Yuanqing Yang (Ph.D. candidate) visited the nano-optics group in the University of Southern Denmark on Jan. 27, 2016 and gave a talk titled "Plasmonic and dielectric nanoantennas".

 

“Spatially and spectrally resolved narrowband optical absorbers" is chosen as Back Cover in Advanced Optical Materials

Spatially and spectrally resolved narrowband optical absorbers have garnered great interest because of their wide applications in solar thermophotovoltaic systems, sensors, photodetectors, photo-thermal modulator. The paper “Spatially and Spectrally Resolved Narrowband Optical Absorber Based on 2D Grating Nanostructures on Metallic Films” presented by Y. Qu and co-workers is chosen as Back Cover in Advanced Optical Material Volume 4, Issue 3, 2016.

 

2016 International Conference on Advanced Concepts in Wave Physics

Prof. Min Qiu, Dr. Qiang Li and other 6 Ph.D candidates attended the International Conference on Advanced Concepts in Wave Physics: topology and parity-time symmetries at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on January 11-15, 2016. Prof. Qiu gave a invited talk on "Plasmonic Photothermal Effect in Metal Nanostructures".

 

Ding zhao has been  awarded "Excellent Student of Zhejiang University", 10 awardees/year in Zhejiang University

Ding zhao has recently been awarded "Excellent Student of Zhejiang University" (10 awardees/year in Zhejiang University). This honour is the highest honour in the Zhejiang University for students who show the noble morality in life and excellent work in study.

 

Prof. Min Qiu has recently been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Prof. Min Qiu has recently been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) "for contributions to nanophotonic devices". IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

 

Four graduate students received scholarship

On Oct. 12, 2015, Xingxing Chen received the doctoral National Scholarship, while Yuanqing Yang, Si Luo, Kaikai Du was awarded other scholarships, respectively. Congratulation!

 

Six graduate student candidates joined Min Qiu’s group

Two master candidates and four PhD candidates became members of Min’ Qiu’s group in Sep. 2015. They are Xuelu Pei, Hao Luo, Ziyao Chen, Jinsheng Lu, Huanzheng Zhu and Yu Hong. Welcome!

 

Group members received a short-term training in KTH

Hanmo Gong and Yurui Qu went to KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden as visiting research students for a short-term training on micro-fabrication technology on Aug. 15-Sep. 15, 2015. Trained by Doc. Xi Chen, they have fabricated an all-optical photothermal switch based on silicon interferometer integrated with MIM light absorbers and conducted the characterization.

The most 30 cited APL articles from Chinese authors in recent 5 years from 2010 to 2014 has been listed on line from the official web. And the first one is from Prof. Min Qiu, "High performance optical absorber based on a plasmonic metamaterial",which is cited 402 times until 22th October.

Prof. Min Qiu Elected SPIE Fellow

After being elected as OSA Fellow, Prof. Min Qiu has recently also been elected a Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) for significant contributions in “Nanophotonic devices based on photonic crystals, plasmonics and metamaterial”.

 

Prof. Min Qiu introduced optical engineering for Zhejiang University students

2 Dec. 2013, Prof. Min Qiu attended the "President•Famous Professor" Forum and introduced optical engineering for Zhejiang University students. Ding Zhao as a representative of the senior shared his college experiences later.

 

Prof. Min Qiu Elected OSA Fellow

Prof. Min Qiu has recently been elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) for his "significant contributions in nanophotonics, including photonic crystals, plasmonics and metamaterials".
The OSA Fellow is awarded to OSA Members who have “served with distinction in the advancement of optics”. This honor is reserved to no more than 10% of the total membership.

Plasmonic wave propagation in silver nanowires: guiding modes or not?

Propagation modes and single-guiding-mode conditions of silver nanowires based surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguides versus the operating wavelength (500-2000 nm) are investigated by Dr. Qiang Li. The paper “Plasmonic wave propagation in silver nanowires: guiding modes or not?” is in the list of the Top Downloads in Optics Express from April, May and June, 2013.

A plasmon ruler based on nanoscale photothermal effect

Distance dependence of particle temperature in an optically heated gold nanoparticle pair is quantitatively investigated by Weichun Zhang to create a plasmon ruler. The paper “A plasmon ruler based on nanoscale photothermal effect” is in the list of the Top Downloads in Optics Express from January 2013.

 

Prof. Min Qiu became the editor of Optics Communications (Elseviser)

Optics Communications is the venue for very rapid publication of short communica-tions on significant developments in the various fields of modern optics. Since May 2012, Prof. Min Qiu became the editor of this journal.

 

Undergradate students of grade 2011 visit our new laboratory

On Dec. 4th, 2011, Undergradate students of grade 2011 was welcomed to take a visit to our new laboratory. Prof. Qiu and Dr. Li carefully introduced to the freshmen the research areas and research facilities of our laboratory.

 

Prof. Min Qiu gave a lecture for Zhejiang University students

25 Sept. 2010, Prof. Min Qiu delivered a lecture on the topic “Roadmap for Nanophotonics" in the Department of Optical Engineering. The next day, he made a lecture as part of the "President•Famous Professor" lecture series by Yunfeng Campus-Department of Optical Engineering cooperation.

 

Institute of Advanced Nanophotonics was established

At the beginning of 2010, Institute of Advanced Nanophotonics was established as part of National Recruitment Program of Global Talents. Prof. Min Qiu is the present director of the institute. The institute is physically located at Building No.3, Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University.
